Why These Measurements Matter:
Magnesium: Natural seawater contains ~1,300 mg/L. In kalkwasser-treated aquaria, levels may drop to 600–700 mg/L. Reef aquaria should maintain 1,200–1,400 mg/L for proper calcium balance and coral growth.
Borate & Carbonate Alkalinity: Seawater total alkalinity is ~2.5 meq/L, with 0.1–0.2 meq/L from borate. Higher borate levels improve pH control and calcium stability, but carbonate must also be balanced. Aim for 4–5 meq/L total alkalinity with 1.5–2.0 meq/L from borate for optimal reef conditions.
